A&A 15″ Magnetic Wooden Set
The A&A 15″ Magnetic Wooden Chess Set combines a flat, stable board with high-quality Staunton pieces. A unique mini bracket supports the folding board so it lies perfectly flat for play, resolving common warping issues seen in traditional folding boards. The set uses a 15-inch playing surface with 1.5-inch mahogany/maple squares and features 3-inch king height with a 1.18-inch base diameter. The natural wood finish is preserved to maintain an authentic look, and the piece tray design adds a pleasant opening experience while protecting the surface below.
Key features include a board that stays flat thanks to the innovative mini bracket, USCF/FIDE-proportion accuracy, and a focus on premium wood tones rather than staining. The design aims to deliver a refined, travel-friendly set that remains sturdy under regular use. The packaging/workspace is designed to feel premium from the moment you open the box, with the pieces neatly arranged in a dedicated tray.

The set is arranged so each piece has a designated storage space within the board itself, reducing the chance of misplacing components during travel. The overall dimensions make it easy to slip into a bag, while the magnetic construction supports quieter, more controlled gameplay outdoors or on the go.
Key benefits include a practical size that fits into backpacks, logical piece sizing to align with board dimensions, and integrated storage to safeguard components. The magnet strength is balanced to hold pieces securely yet allow easy movement, providing a reliable travel chess experience without constant rearranging. This option suits players who want a travel-ready, organized solution with a classic wooden aesthetic.

The absence of staining preserves a natural wood tone and a premium appearance for both home and travel use.
Buying Guide: Magnetic Chess Sets
- Board size and portability: Consider the playing area versus the fold size. Larger boards offer better visibility but are less portable; compact boards are ideal for travel and public spaces.
- Magnetic strength and piece stability: Magnets should be strong enough to hold pieces during movement, yet not so strong that moves feel stiff or imprecise. Look for boards with integrated magnets in both board and pieces for maximum stability.
- Storage and organization: Sets with built-in storage or compartments minimize piece loss and simplify packing for trips. Felt linings help reduce noise and protect pieces.
- Board construction and finish: Natural wood tones vs staining affects aesthetics and tactile feel. Durable folding hinges and table-like support offer long-term reliability.
- Piece design and standardization: Staunton pieces and proportionally correct king heights help ensure compatibility with standard rules and strategies. Check base diameter relative to piece height for balance.
- Weight and materials: Lightweight ABS or plastic sets are excellent for travel; heavier wooden sets feel premium but may require more care during transport.
- Durability under travel: Look for reinforced hinges, protective cases, and snug piece storage to withstand repeated packing and unpacking.
- Price-to-value: Compare build quality, included extras (extra queens, storage), and warranty where available to gauge value beyond the price tag.
- Intended use: For beginners, beginner-friendly sets with easy storage are ideal; for frequent travellers or outdoor use, rugged builds and high magnet strength are preferable.
Overall, the best magnetic chess set for you depends on your balance of portability, stability, and storage convenience. The selected options cover a spectrum—from compact travel boards to larger, premium wooden sets—so UK players can choose a model aligned with how they play, where they play, and how often they travel. Always verify that the board size, magnet strength, and included extras meet your preferences before purchasing.
