Buying Guide
- Weight range and resolution: Choose scales with a practical weight range (typically 0.1 g to 50 kg) and fine resolution (±1–5 g). This matters when weighing small fish accurately and when comparing multiple catches.
- Display and readability: A backlit LCD or bright display improves readability in dim conditions on early mornings or evenings by the water. Consider auto-off features to conserve battery life without sacrificing quick access.
- Durability and grip: Look for durable housing (ABS or metal) and a secure, comfortable grip. A strong hook and stability during hanging weigh-ins reduce measurement errors and user fatigue.
- Units and tare: Unit conversion (kg/lb/oz) is essential for versatility. Tare functionality helps subtract the weight of line or containers, ensuring net weights are accurate.
- Battery life and included batteries: Scales that include batteries offer immediate usability. If battery life is short, choose models with low power consumption or USB-C charging options where available.
- Additional features: Built-in measuring tapes, data lock, auto-off, and memory for the heaviest catch can save time and improve data management for anglers who log their sessions.
- Portability and storage: Compact designs, foldable arms or slim profiles are advantageous for travellers and boat use, where space is limited and weight matters.
- Brand reliability and reviews: Seek feedback on accuracy and durability from other UK anglers. Brands with clear warranties and accessible customer support tend to provide better long-term value.
- Versatility for luggage and fishing: Some scales double as luggage scales, which can be convenient for travellers who also weigh gear or packages, though ensure the scale retains accuracy across weighing tasks.
